Wrong way driver charged

SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - The driver of a vehicle that crashed into at least three other vehicles while driving the wrong way on Route 22 now faces charges.

Joseph Hoch, 36, of Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by a vehicle, DUI, and recklessly endangering another person.

Around 10:45 p.m. on Sat., July 26, Hoch drove his Dodge pickup truck east in the westbound lanes of Route 22 from at least the Cedar Crest Boulevard exit toward the 15th Street exit in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, state police said.

Hoch did not have his headlights on and was speeding, police said. He hit two vehicles head-on.  A fourth vehicle was unable to stop and hit Hoch's vehicle and one of the two he'd collided with, police said.

Police are also investigating minor crashes that Hoch may have caused prior to the accident.

All drivers and passengers involved in the accidents were taken to the hospital.

Hoch's preliminary arraignment date has not yet been set.
