Police: Man busted for attack on elderly woman

85-year-old Connie Caltagirone is recovering after she was assaulted and robbed outside of her Mount Penn home on Monday.

Police say 23-year-old William Smith of Birdsboro followed Caltagirone off of a BARTA bus, knocked her down, and took her purse in the 1900 block of Perkiomen Avenue Monday afternoon.

Caltagirone's neighbor, Joyce Beekley, ran outside to help Caltagirone when she heard the commotion: "I think it was horrible [...] especially when a young man is chasing an elderly woman. It's really sad." Beekley said.

The attacker was gone by the time Beekley reached her neighbor.

Police say tips about Smith came pouring in after WFMZ showed a surveillance photo on the Berks Edition on Monday. He was apprehended hours later and arraigned on Tuesday. Smith's bond is set at $50,000.

Caltagirone will spend time in a rehabilitation facility until she is fully recovered. Both she and Joyce say they are not going to let what happened cause them to live in fear.
