Police: Woman birthed stillborn baby in bathtub, put baby out as trash

Officials: Mom hid pregnancy before leaving baby in trash

BLYTHE TWP., Pa. - A Schuylkill County woman is accused of giving birth to a stillborn baby in her bathtub, placing it in a garbage bag and putting it out with the trash.

Tara Paltanavage's water broke on July 29 while she was in her bathroom, according to court documents.  She then moved herself to the bathtub and gave birth to a baby.

Paltanavage, 22, of the 100 block of Winfield Drive in Blythe Township, said her baby was not breathing and did not have a pulse, authorities said.

Instead of calling for help or attempting to resuscitate the baby, she placed the baby in a garbage bag, added other household garbage to the bag and placed it outside her house to be picked up by trash collectors, according to court documents.

Around 1 a.m. on Aug. 5, resident of the same address as Paltanavage detected a terrible odor from the garbage bag and discovered the baby's remains.

Police were called and discovered Paltanavage had appeared to be pregnant recently but had denied it to the people living in her house and to her fiance.

She was arrested and is now facing charges that include concealing the death of a child, endangering the welfare of children and abuse of corpse.
