Corbett seeks to change view of education record

HARRISBURG, Pa. - For three years, Pennsylvania Democrats have pointed to budget-balancing cuts in education aid that Republican Gov. Tom Corbett signed.

And it shows. Franklin and Marshall College pollster Terry Madonna says education is the single-most important issue to Pennsylvania voters for the first time in modern history.

Corbett may finally have found an effective strategy to counter that attack.

He's pounding the Republican-controlled Legislature for not reining in a $50 billion pension debt that, he charges, is driving up property taxes, hurting families and squeezing out money for classrooms.

But Corbett's doing it with less than four months until the Nov. 4 election as he tries to turn around poor polling numbers in his race against Democrat Tom Wolf.

Still, Madonna says, at this point, he has no other choice.
