Qu'eed Batts Sentenced to Life in Prison

An Easton teen who said he killed on orders from a gang member will spend the rest of his life in prison. 16 year Qu'eed Batts was sentenced for shooting and killing 16 year old Clarence Edwards. WFMZ's Bo Koltnow has more. On a cold February night back in 2006.... The porch of 713 Spring Garden Street marked the end of one life and the loss of liberty for another. >>Delores 7:30-37 Miss him everyday, we talk about him, is CJ near? Never thought he would be gone. >>Reporter Delores Howell watched her grandson 16 year old Clarence Edwards die on her front porch. A then 14 year old Qu'eed Batts, acting on orders from a fellow gang member, shot Edwards twice in the head. Batts also shot 19 year old Cory Hilario in the back. For the crimes Batts received the mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. Also 6 to 20 years for attempted homicide. Both sentences will be served together. >>Bo 10:29-40 Since Batts is not serving his sentence back to back, the door is open for a chance, although extraordinarily low that after rehabilitation he could be re- released into society. >>Reporter Both sides say they agree with the Judge's decision because of Batt's troubled upbringing. >>Terry 56-03 When you have a killer that is that age, all you have is hope and the judge wanted to leave that open. >>Philip 3:27-34 He has expressed on a number of occasions sincere regret for what happened. >>Reporter As Batts defense decides on an appeal, the prosecution hopes Monday's sentence sends a clear message to all gang members. >>Terry 38-47 We are going to prosecute you as an adult not a juvenile. We are going to keep coming and coming until this craziness stops. >>Reporter For Howell and the rest of her family the sentence marks closure to a wound will never fully heal. Bo Koltnow 69 News.
