DETROIT - Acura showed off its RDX Prototype Monday, giving a good look at what the next compact SUV will look like.
The third generation of Acura’s small SUV will go on sale in mid-2018, looking much like the prototype revealed at the 2018 North American International Auto Show.
There, Acura managers gave more information about the new car, too. For example, they said the new car will be wider and the wheelbase will grow by 2.5 inches for a more comfortable ride.
Inside, all RDX models will have a panoramic moonroof, and the audio system can come with four speakers integrated into the roof for a more immersive sound experience.
Acura managers also promised that the car will use real wood and metal trim pieces inside, instead of plastic made to look like wood or metal.
There’s room for five people inside, and the front-seat passengers can make themselves comfortable in the dual 16-way power seats.
The 10.2-inch center-mounted screen can be controlled from a touch pad within easy reach of the driver, in the center console. Acura managers say that, in testing, drivers were able to comfortably use the system after just a couple minutes of practice.
Under the shiny red paint, Acura managers say the new car will be based on its own unique platform and no longer share a platform with the Honda CR-V. There will be a new two-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission to maximize fuel economy.
All this combines into what Acura executives say will be the quickest and best-handling RDX ever.
