Senior Citizens Form Tea Party Group

Some retirees in Montgomery County have traded the shuffleboard court for the political arena.

They're "toasting" their golden years by forming a new Tea Party group.

Shannondell at Valley Forge in Montgomery county might be a retirement community to many but for Nord Bjorke, Howard Hinkley, and Bill Moeller it represents the golden age of politics.

I've always been a political junkie and activist, said Moeller.

These octogenarians helped form the tea-party group at Shannondell. >&

I was very concerned with spending of our federal government, said Bjorke.

The steering committee of about a dozen senior citizens formed in August.

Not only energetic physically but minds are energetic, said Moeller.

Their goal is to educate the 950 residents of Shannondell. Similar to Tea Party groups across the country these politically active grandparents say they want to limit government, reel in spending, and oust career politicians.

My first vote was Dwight Eishenhower, said Hinkley.

My first vote was 1948, Moeller said.

The November elections are just a few weeks away but when the final ballot is cast it doesn't mean these tea-partiers are done. They're only just beginning.

Shannondell's Performing Arts Center is where they hope to bring political speakers and eventually having every seat filled for their monthly meetings.

In the meantime they're busy making calls, planning strategy, trying to educate those in the twilight of their lives.

I think you need to stay vibrant, said member Shirley Zimmer. In order to do that have to get involved in different things.

Pool or politics, for these retirees, life isn't staying still.
