Several service events to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Several events honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be held across the region on Monday.

In Lehigh County, Cedar Crest College in Allentown will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the opening of a new center on campus. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held to mark the grand opening of the Center for Diversity and Global Engagement at 2 p.m.

Also in Allentown, the Lehigh Conference of Churches will hold an interfaith prayer breakfast and service from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Dubbs Memorial Community Center, at 457 West Allen Street.  

Allentown School District Superintendent Thomas Parker will present the keynote speech, "Working Together to End the School to Prison Pipeline." The cost of the breakfast is $20.

In Bethlehem, The NAACP will sponsor a 9 a.m. breakfast at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, on 321 Wyandotte Street. The guest speaker will be Rev. Thomas A. Sweatt, the pastor of St. James AME Zion Church in Allentown. 

In the Poconos, the Full Gospel Holiness Church Of God In Christ at 167 Summit Avenue, Pocono Summit, will sponsor a breakfast and a local march beginning at 8:00 a.m. from the Church to the Pocono Summit Firehouse located approximately one-fourth of a mile from the church at 5335 Hummingbird Drive, Pocono Summit, Pa.

There are several events running in Berks County as well.

In Reading, teens will be serving at the Greater Berks Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Goggleworks as part of a community art project. The projects are organized by Youth Volunteer Corps.

Penn State Berks students can volunteer at several organizations both on campus and in the local Reading community.

Some Alvernia University students will also volunteer locally, including work inside and outside the Pagoda.

Also in Reading, the Red Cross and UGI will team up to install free smoke alarms and replace batteries in existing alarms for families in the area.

In Monroe County, hundreds of Perkiomen Valley School District students will volunteer at various organizations throughout their community.
