Some may not have electricity again until the weekend

Crews scramble to restore power

The tens of thousands of people who are in the dark might have to wait several days before power is restored, officials said.

PPL customers should be prepared for the worst, said spokesman Michael Wood.

Several of PPL's high voltage transmissions towers were slammed by the storm, and those towers supply substations, Wood said.

He said the company has about 900 jobs in the Lehigh Valley alone. That's compared to about 200 jobs during a typical power outage.

The storm knocked out power for more than three million electric customers on the East Coast, and tens of thousands of those people are in the 69 News viewing area.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, PPL reported 122,394 customers throughout its 29-county area were without power. Some 64,688 of them were located in Lehigh Co., 4,339 in Berks Co., 10,292 in Bucks Co., 1,369 in Carbon Co., 1,578 in Montgomery Co., 23,718 in Northampton Co., and 2,639 in Schuylkill Co.

PPL customers can report outages by calling 1-800-342-5775.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, Met-Ed reported about 32,857 of its customers in Berks Co. were without power. Some 4,151 Met-Ed customers in Bucks County, 1,512 in Montgomery Co., 1,607 in Lehigh Co., and 5,537 in Northampton Co. were also in the dark. Met-Ed said that it had brought in crews from western Pennsylvania and Ohio to help it restore electricity as quickly as possible.
