Pottstown teens arrested in taped beating of park ranger in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police have arrested two suspects and are searching for a third in the videotaped beating of a city park ranger trying to enforce a no-skateboarding rule.

The beating happened Friday afternoon at Love Park, home to a Robert Indiana LOVE sculpture and a one-time skateboarding mecca featured in a video game.

Police said they arrested a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old on Monday. Both Pottstown men face charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and making terroristic threats.

The video shows a skateboarder punching the ranger in the face after refusing his request to leave, police said.

An onlooker's video also appears to show a suspect spitting at and kicking the ranger while he was on the ground. Police said a second suspect taunted him and a third videotaped the incident.

One of the arrested suspects told our partner station, WPVI-TV, that he lost his cool and is sorry.

"If I had the chance, I would apologize to that guy," said Curtis Tanner, the 19-year-old.

The ranger's injuries were minor.

Anyone with information about the assault or the identity of the third person being sought is asked to contact Philadelphia police at 215-686-3047 or 215-686-TIPS (8477). You can also submit a tip via email to or text to PPDTIP (773847). All tips will remain confidential, police said.

The city renovated Love Park in 2002 and reopened it with a permanent ban on skateboarding, but there have been other reported incidents between skateboarders and authorities in recent years.
