Sen. Casey wants NRC to plan for 'shadow evacuations'

WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Bob Casey is urging the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to come up with an emergency plan for people who live more than 10 miles from nuclear power plants.

The plan would affect a much larger part of the region because of our proximity to the Exelon Generating Station in Limerick Twp., Montgomery Co.

Casey said he's concerned because 80 percent of Pennsylvanians live within 50 miles of a nuclear plant.

Within the 10 miles, there's obviously very detailed evacuation plans, but once you get between 10 miles and 50 miles there a different set of circumstances.

Casey said he sent a letter to regulators about the issue.
