Student robbery suspect apprehended at Pottstown High School

POTTSTOWN, Pa. - An armed robbery suspect who attends Pottstown High School was apprehended as he arrived for classes Wednesday morning, officials said.

The 17-year-old boy, a 10th grade alternative education student, used a pellet gun in an attempt to rob another person at North Charlotte and Beech streets in Pottstown around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The victim refused to give anything to the suspect, who then fled the scene, police said.

When officers went to the suspect's home Wednesday morning, his parents told them he had already left for school, officials said.

"Due to timely communications from concerned citizens and the Pottstown Police Department, the school administration was alerted and responded immediately and appropriately, which enabled district staff to assist in the apprehension of the student as he entered the building," said the district's superintendent, Jeffrey R. Sparagana.

The suspect was not armed with a weapon at the time he was apprehended, and there was no danger to any of the school's students or staff, Sparagana said.

Police said they plan to charge the student, whose name was not released, as an adult in the case.
