West Norriton suffers flash floods

People were rescued, others seek higher ground

WEST NORRITON, Pa. - Flooding created some sad and strange scenes in West Norriton in Montgomery County Monday night.

For instance, flooding off of Port Indian Road in West Norriton which closed off parts of East and West Indian Lane left folks like Lynn and Jim Watters stranded in their home.

When 69 News found them, the couple was in a structure across a newly formed body of water formed by all the flooding.

A 69 News crew actually had to send a microphone across the flooding on their homemade chair lift which they built after another flood years ago.

"We used it in 2014 to get back in the house,” the couple explained.

The Watters say the heavy rain Monday morning caused flooding from both the Schuylkill River and a nearby stream.

"It was coming up like a raging river, yeah," explained Lynn.

While Lynn and Jim were prepared for the flooding with their chairlift, others around the area were not.

At the Willowbrook Apartments just a few miles away families were rescued from their units by firefighters evacuating them with a rope and life jackets.

Meanwhile, as cleanup continues at the apartment complex, the Watters and their neighbors are preparing for the river to continue to rise overnight.

"I'm a little anxious about it, not looking forward to the cleanup," said resident Sean Welch.

"We put stuff up on shelves, got the trucks up and the cars up, lawn mower up on the bank, generator up on the porch, bicycles up on the porch," continued Welch.

Expectations are for the river to crest early Tuesday morning and residents say that's when the real job of cleaning up begins.
