ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A tip and a bad check led police to a homicide suspect they had been hunting for months.
Manuel Gonzalez is accused of killing an aspiring teen rapper in Allentown in October.
Police found Gonzalez, 24, hiding in the attick of a home on Hall Street on Monday evening. He was originally arrested on a bad check warrant and later charged with the death of Devon Robinson.
When Robinson's grandmother got the knock on the door Monday night, detectives had the news she'd been praying for.
"He said, 'I have some good news for you.' Once he said that, my heart looked like it just fell," said Phyllis Mason. "He said, 'We got him.'"
Prayer is what got Mason and her family through the pain of Robinson's killing.
"It's still an open wound," said Tymell Briggs, one of Robinson's cousins. "It's going to be an open wound for years and years."
Robinson, 19, who went by the stage name, "Daze Dysh," had dreams of becoming a rap star. Those dreams ended on Oct. 22 when he was shot multiple times after a fight at the A+ Mini Mart at 12th and Hamilton streets, just blocks from his home.
Monday evening, police arrested Gonzalez after receiving a tip that he was inside a home on Hall Street, hiding in the attic of a home near Gordon.
"We believe that he may have not been in the area for some time, but he had subsequently returned to the Allentown area," said Asst. Chief Joe Hanna, Allentown Police Dept.
According to a criminal complaint, witnesses initially identified the shooter only as "M-G," but later identified Gonzales through a photo lineup.
"That's what we had. We had initials to work with," said Hanna. "Not much at all."
Posts on Robinson's Facebook page said Robinson can finally rest in peace.
As for the man accused, Mason said she thinks about the Lord's Prayer.
"I forgive him. It's the hardest thing to do, but if you don't forgive the others for their faults," she said, "how can I ask to be forgiven for something if I can't forgive the next person for their faults, and their trespasses?"
Other than the bad check warrant and some minor drug arrests, Gonzales does not appear to have a prior crimional record.
