Tanker truck, car collide in Upper Milford; 1 dead; fuel spilled

UPPER MILFORD TWP., Pa. - One person was killed Sunday night in a crash involving a car and a tanker truck hauling thousands of gallons of diesel fuel, officials said.

The accident happened around 10 p.m. at Buckeye and Tank Farm roads in Upper Milford Twp., Lehigh Co.

James Heller was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier west on Buckeye Road as a tanker truck was attempting to turn onto Buckeye, said officials, adding that the car ended up beneath the truck in the intersection.

Heller, 61, of Macungie, Lehigh Co., died at the scene, said officials; the tanker was driven by Matthew Phillip Wise, 26, of Fort Bragg, N.C. Officials did not say whether he was injured.

Buckeye Road was closed for several hours as hazmat crews spent cleaned up fuel that spilled from the tanker.

Anyone who witnessed this crash is asked to contact state police in Fogelsville at 610-395-1438.
