Teacher, swimming coach accused of having relationship with student

Alleged victim reported having sex with suspect in pool area at school

Police: Teacher had sex with girl

EXETER TWP, Pa. - A high school teacher and swimming coach was arrested Tuesday on charges he had a sexual relationship with a female student.

The suspect, Jonathan Bell, is a teacher in the Exeter Township School District and a boys' water polo coach for Governor Mifflin High School, said Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly.

Between December 2010 and June 2012, Bell, 31, of Wyomissing, engaged in a sexual relationship with a female student, who was 17-years-old when the relationship began, according to the criminal complaint.

Bell solicited the girl for nude photographs, performed a sexually graphic act for her on video and had at least one sexual encounter with her on school property, Kelly said.

The alleged victim told investigators she and Bell had sexual intercourse 10 to 12 times between December 2010 and May 5, 2011 at Bell's home in Wyomissing, at her home and in the swimming pool area at the Governor Mifflin Intermediate School, according to court documents.

Bell was taken into custody Tuesday morning and charged with two counts of unlawful contact with a minor, one count of corruption of minors and one count of criminal solicitation. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $200,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 13 at 9 a.m.

Bell worked for Exeter as a high school art teacher since 2005, said Beverly Martin, district superintendent, noting that he has been suspended without pay with the intent to terminate.

Bell worked for Governor Mifflin as a coach since 2003, said district officials, who added that, as of Tuesday, he's no longer employed by the district.

The investigation remains active and ongoing investigation, Kelly said. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Chief Detective Michael Gombar of Berks County District Attorney's office at 610-478-7171.
