Teen catches copper thief on video in Allentown

Man caught stealing pipe

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - An Allentown family claims their teenage son stopped a copper thief in the act on Wednesday.

The teen was able to snap a few photos, even a video, before the thief took off running.

Bill Hanna said his 15-year-old son was home alone when a thief started removing downspouts from his home in the 1000 block of Fullerton Avenue.

"He came and heard a noise. He looked by the window, he saw this man pulling the rest of the downspouts," Hanna said.

Hanna said the thief showed up around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

"It was crazy. I was shocked. Someone in the middle of the day. They could care less about the law, everyone around him," Hanna said.

Hanna said the thief took off soon after the photos were taken.

"He was parked in my driveway.. pretending to be a family member or a contractor hired by us. The minute he heard my son and he saw my son taking his picture, He quickly ran away," Hanna said.

Hanna called showing up midday a gutsy move. But he said it was by no means, a brave one.

"You cannot call this kind of action a brave action. Because he's a robber. He's a thief. He's crazy. He's as coward as the other thieves," Hanna said.

He said the thief got away with thousands of dollars of materials.

The thief snagged 11 spouts, nearly 175 feet of copper piping, and the family's snow blower.
Hanna said he is considering replacing the spouting with copper-free materials.

He also plans to add more security measures to his property.

"More protection with cameras, videos, and everything else," Hanna said.

Hanna said the man in the video was last seen driving a red sedan.

Police are still investigating. A suspect has not yet been identified. Anyone with information should contact Allentown Police.
