SPRING TWP., Pa. - Attention shoppers. Kohl's is one step closer to coming to Berks County.
The Spring Township supervisors Tuesday night approved the use of land at Paper Mill Road and Meridian Boulevard for a Kohl's department store.
The developer, BPG Development Co. of Bucks County, must still present plans for the store itself, which must also be given the supervisors' okay.
The 8-acre site, across the street from the existing Broadcasting Square shopping center, had previously been approved for an office building and restaurants.
The supervisors approved the new plans for the land on the condition that Kohl's restrict its hours to 6:00 a.m. until midnight, seven days a week. The store will be allowed to remain open 24-hours/day for holiday shopping in November and December.
The Kohl's will create about 120 full- and part-time jobs, said township officials. The company employs 136,000 associates at nearly 1,100 stores in 49 states across the country, according to its website. Its annual sales exceed $18 billion.
The Wisconsin-based company, which opened its first store in 1962, hopes to open its 87,000 square-foot store in Spring Township by the fall of 2012. The store will have parking for slightly more than 450 vehicles, said township officials.
Kohl's had been trying to open a store in Berks County for quite some time. Its closest stores to the Reading area are located at the Coventry Mall near Pottstown and in Trexlertown, Lehigh County.
Spring Township has experienced quite a growth in commercial development over the years.
Broadcasting Square, its largest shopping center, features several restaurants and big-box stores, including Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, Weis, Ross, Party City and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
Walmart had wanted to build a superstore on another tract of land across Broadcasting Road from Broadcasting Square, but the retail giant dropped its plans in 2007 after facing strong opposition from an organized group of residents. Walmart instead renovated its existing store in neighboring Wyomissing and expanded its store in Exeter Township.
