Could Fogelsville's Glasbern Inn be getting unwanted neighbors?
It's a question many are asking after the owner of the bed and breakfast says he must sell half his farm.
"What does this farm and this area mean to you?" owner Al Granger was asked.
"It's my life, I put it together for the past 28 years. It's very meaningful to me," Granger said.
His Glasbern Inn B&B sits on nearly 200 bucolic acres in Weisenberg Twp., Lehigh Co.
Land acquired to stave off suburbia but he says a lawsuit stemming from an accident involving a former employee is forcing him to sell 100 acres.
"What do you think it will look like in five years? " he was asked.
"I don't want to know," he answered.
Neither do some of his neighbors.
"The view is nice, sometimes steers are out there, sheep are out there," neighbor Norm Ziegler said.
He's bordered the farm for about 10 years. If development moves in, he says he'll move out.
"This is so nice to come out here and sit. Take the view away? This is country living," he said.
Granger said he tried to preserve the land with the county but so far hasn't had much luck.
"Kind of not nice to see farmland go all the time," neighbor Pat Donohue said.
The area is zoned rural, meaning homes must be built on a minimum of one acre. However due to the topography the township says the 100 acres would most likely only have about 40 new homes.
"Ideal situation would be to have a farmer come in and take it over but farmers don't have that much money," Granger said.
Granger says the land will be up for auction this September. So each trip through the farm takes on new meaning on what is now considered endangered ground.
