Two crashes, one involving officer, reported minutes apart

Co-workers, rescue crews lift backhoe off driver after crash

BERN TWP., Pa. - Two separate crashes that happened just minutes apart sent two people to the hospital in Bern Township, Berks County Tuesday morning.

The first happened around 9:00 in the northbound lane of State Route 183, near Route 222.

Police say Cory Shirey, 18, of Oley, was operating a mini-backhoe in the area when he drove into the path of a car.

Officials say Shirey became trapped under the backhoe, which was eventually lifted off of him by his co-workers and first responders. He suffered serious shoulder and hip injuries, and he's listed in good condition at the hospital.

The second crash happened less than five minutes later, when a Bern Township Police Officer who was responding to the first crash entered an intersection with its lights and sirens activated. Officials say a Kia Soul driven by John Novack drove into the police cruiser's path, and the vehicles collided.

Novack suffered minor injuries. The officer was not hurt.
