Water rafter in distress rescued along Lehigh River

Water rafter pulled to safety

A water rafter in distress along the Lehigh River was brought to safety during a dramatic rescue in Carbon County.

A woman got stranded in her raft around 4 p.m. Saturday when it got stuck on a pillar of the Weissport Bridge near Lehighton.

Members of the Lehighton Fire Department's Water Rescue Squad were able to use a boat to rescue her.

One man grabbed the woman by the vest and pulled her to safety.

Lehighton Fire Chief Gary Frable said the crew needed about 20 minutes to rescue the woman, who was a passenger of Lehigh Whitewater Rafting.

No one was hurt.

Frable said higher water levels caused by the recent rain presented a challenge for the rescue crew.
