CHESTERFIELD TWP., N.J. - The driver of a school bus that collided with a truck last week reported he pulled ahead of the roadway stop line to get a clear view and never saw the truck coming, investigators said Friday.
John Tieman, 66, had been a school bus driver for just three weeks when the accident occurred Feb. 16 in Chesterfield Twp., Burlington Co., N.J., the National Transportation Safety Board said.
The NTSB also found the truck, hauling asphalt, was 5% overweight, but investigator Peter Kotowski said no conclusions have been reached.
Triplet Isabelle Tezsla, a state trooper's daughter, was killed in the crash. Two other 11-year-old students, including one of her sisters, remain hospitalized in critical condition. The other sister was released from the hospital on Wednesday.
Local officials are proactively making safety improvements at the intersection, including adding warning signs, Kotowski said.
