Owner drops off dog to be groomed, gets call she's dead

Woman wants answers from Flemington PetSmart

FLEMINGTON, N.J. - A Hunterdon County woman said her dog died while being groomed at PetSmart in Flemington, New Jersey.

Danielle DiNapoli said she brought Scruffles, an 8-year-old bulldog, to a routine grooming appointment in late December and got a call an hour after dropping the dog off that Scruffles was dead.

DiNapoli said PetSmart employees brought Scruffles' body to a local veterinarian’s office and left it there.

"They dropped off a dead dog and left. They abandoned my dog…left it like a piece of trash,” DiNapoli said.

DiNapoli said she can’t get a straight answer from PetSmart about what happened and said she wants a written report about what lead up to Scruffles' death.

DiNapoli started a Facebook campaign called 'Justice for Scruffles' which has since gone viral.

DiNapoli said people around the country have messaged her about their own PetSmart grooming horror stories, including a woman who said her dog died at the Flemington PetSmart just a week before Scruffles.

"It's beyond frustrating. My dog was healthy,” DiNapoli said.

In a statement posted on social media PetSmart wrote  "We are truly saddened by the loss of Scruffles. We immediately conducted a comprehensive internal investigation and found the associates involved followed all policies and procedures consistent with care and services provided to breeds such as bulldogs."

"If they did everything according to their procedures why are they refusing to give a written report?” Danielle DiNapoli said.
