WFMZ's Chandi Lowry wins national award

WFMZ's Chandi Lowry has won a special national award.

She was honored with an NABJ Salute to Excellence Award for her story "Breaking Barriers: The Greatest Game Never Played." It's a story about how students of different races at Lafayette College came together to fight against discrimination in the 1940s.

The story won in the Television Sports - Top 15 Markets category.

The awards ceremony was held in New Orleans at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention on Saturday.

Casey Killian was the photographer for the story.

The NABJ awards include all types of media at all levels, including network news categories.

The story has also won a Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcast Association award, a Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters award, and a nomination for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Emmys.
