Why Do They Call It The...Queen City?

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Some people call it Allentown, others the Queen City. But how did this nickname befitting royalty come to be?

Allentown is quite a town, or, well, city.

"I love Allentown. I love Allentown."

With more than 100,000 people it's the third most populous in the state.

"Just a tremendous place I think to live, work, and play."

But Allentown is not just known by that name.

"Have you heard it referred to as the Queen City? I've heard it. Always. Always."

You don't have to look too far to find references to royalty.

"We are one of the jewels in the crown in the state of Pennsylvania."

A good reason... no matter where you're coming from... to drop on in.

While some would give it another nickname...

"I would say A-town."

Nicknames themselves are pretty common for places. Take New York City... it's known as The Big Apple. Las Vegas is Sin City. And New Orleans... The Big Easy. But Queen City?

"I would think that some sort of royalty had passed through."

Well it seems Queen City dates back to the early 1900's. It's believed to have come from a competition hosted by the Allentown Chamber of Commerce. The winning entry was said to be Queen City.

"Allentown is definitely royalty and we live up to its name here."

While there may be a number of other Queen Cities across the country. Take Burlington, Vermont or Cincinnati, Ohio. Some say this... is the fairest of them all. So why do they call it the Queen City? Now you know.
