Woman dead after being struck by police car

NESQUEHONING, Pa. - A woman was killed Monday when the car she was riding in was hit by a police cruiser.

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Route 209 in Nesquehoning, Carbon County.

Ofc. Stephen Homanko lost control of his Crown Victoria while trying to drive around a curve on Route 209, state police said.

The driver and passenger of a Toyota Yaris -- Michael Sauers, 64, and Carola Sauers, 69, were flown to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, Lehigh County, for treatment of their injuries.

Carola later died, police said.

Homanko, 25, was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown for treatment.

Investigators have not said what, if any charges will be filed. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact state police at 610-377-4270.
