Vontae Davis thought he was sending out a harmless tweet about friend and former teammate Sean Smith to his 154,000 followers on Wednesday afternoon. Instead he quickly found himself backtracking after committing an NFL faux pas that could have gotten another team in trouble. Davis wrote, “I seen my dude Sean Smith last night he said he talking to KC him & B Flowers will makes a good Duo.” Smith, a free agent, is far apart in negotiations with the Dolphins, and the team appears ready to let him leave in free agency when it begins on March 12. And the Chiefs certainly make sense, as they search for a corner to play opposite Brandon Flowers — a Delray Beach native — and have Smith’s mentor, former Dolphins coaching intern Al Harris, as defensive backs coach. The conversation quickly turned into a bad comedy routine. Smith caught wind of Davis’ gaffe and replied in Twitter, “Whoa! No I didn’t.” Davis, an ex-Dolphin now with Indianapolis, tried to claim his Twitter account was hacked, and Smith later clarified that “I’ve never talked to any other team besides the Miami Dolphins. Yes I talked to vontae and I told him Al Harris (our former coach) got the job up in KC and that I talked to him a few days ago to tell him congrats. That’s it!” NFL rules prevent teams from talking to free agents on other teams before March 9. In extreme cases of tampering, teams have been docked draft picks. But tampering is common among all 32 NFL teams, especially at the scouting combine, which ended Tuesday. The Dolphins would have to provide the league with concrete evidence of tampering, beyond Davis’ tweet. - See more at: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/sports/football/whoa-miami-dolphins-sean-smith-denies-contact-with/nWb5M/#sthash.R9icx8OP.dpuf
