Lehigh Valley drops suspended game 7-2, and night cap 5-1 to Red Sox

IronPigs

The IronPigs woes continued Thursday night.  Ethan Martin would take over for Sean O'Sullivan on the mound as Wednesday night's suspended game against Pawtucket would resume. Pawtucket added a run to their 3-2 lead on a sac fly in the 5th, then the wheels came off in the 8th, as Matt Spring smoked a two-run double off Jeremy Horst. Mookie Betts would add an rbi single, as Pawtucket went on to take Game 1, 7-2.  In the night cap, things didn't get any better, eventhough the IronPigs wore their Michael Jackson tribute jerseys.  Tyler Henson's rbi double in the 4th would account for Lehigh Valley's lone run of the night.  Pawtucket's Ryan Roberts went 3 for 4 with 3 rbi and a run scored.   The Red Sox take Game 2, 5-1.  The IronPigs now have lost 5 straight.  They travel to Buffalo for a four game set with the Bisons beginning Friday night.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Cole Hamels pitched eight strong innings and Chase Utley had an RBI single to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.

Hamels (5-5) got the better of Tim Hudson in a matchup between starters who have combined for seven All-Star appearances. The Philadelphia left-hander gave up six hits while striking out 10 and walking one.

Hudson (8-7) gave up two runs in six innings although both were unearned. The right-hander struck out six and walked two.

The Giants, who were looking for their first four-game sweep in Philadelphia since 1998, lost for just the second time in eight games. San Francisco's lead over the idle Dodgers in the NL West dropped to 1 1/2 games entering this weekend's three-game series between the rivals at AT&T Park.
