Playing cornerback can be hazardous to shoulder sockets, as the Lions have found out all too often recently. Bill Bentley, a third-round pick last year, underwent a second surgery this off-season to repair his dislocated shoulder, a person familiar with the procedure said. Aaron Berry's 2010 season was cut short by shoulder surgery. Alphonso Smith's, too. And Chris Houston had a shoulder operation in January of 2011 to fix a problem that nagged him since college. According to multiple reports, Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum after this week's NFL combine. Milliner is widely regarded as the top defensive back in the draft and could be in consideration for the Lions with the No. 5 pick. Speaking in general terms Thursday, Lions coach Jim Schwartz said his team wouldn't shy away from drafting a player like Milliner because of his shoulder injury. "If they had it in the past, if they've already been operated on, we've dealt with other players like that," Schwartz said. "But it is part of the whole evaluation. The medical (tests are) the No. 1 reason why we're all here." The Lions have taken a number of players with injury concerns in recent drafts, though they've typically stomached those risks on Days 2 and 3. Last year, they drafted receiver Ryan Broyles in the second round even though he tore his ACL five months earlier at Oklahoma. They traded up to get running back Jahvid Best in the first round of 2010 despite his history of brain injuries, and they took Jason Fox in the fourth round of the same draft when he was coming off knee surgery. "Injuries are a part of the landscape in the NFL," Schwartz said. "If you think that because a guy hasn't been injured before, if you think that all of a sudden he's going to be injury free you're probably making a mistake. And ... this league's filled with guys who have had major injuries in college and have bounced back and have had successful NFL careers."
