The Alvernia men had all the momentum coming into the night. A max capacity crowd, an eight-game winning streak and the excitement of playing the first game on Jack McCloskey Court.
But cross-town rival Albright had other ideas.
The Lions came into the hostile environment and defeated Alvernia 57-54 to force a tie atop the Commonwealth Conference Standings.
The Crusaders had a chance to tie it at the final buzzer, but the shot was just off, allowing Albright to rush the court in celebration.
These two rivals split the season series. Alvernia (10-3, 15-4) will host Elizabethtown Saturday afternoon. Albright (10-3, 17-3) will welcome Lebanon Valley to Reading on Saturday.
The Albright and Alvernia women tipped things off on Wednesday night. The lady Lions ran away with a 68-45 victory.
The win moves Albright (5-8, 9-11) into the fifth and final playoff spot in the Commonwealth Conference standings. The loss drops Alvernia (4-9, 7-13) to eighth overall. Both teams will play before the men on Saturday.
