The Houston Astros signed right-handed reliever Kyle Farnsworth, who will be available for Saturday's game against the Chicago White Sox.

Farnsworth, 38, was released by the New York Mets earlier this week. He served as the team's closer until his release. He was 0-3 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and three saves in 17 innings before being cut.

To make room for Farnsworth on the 25-man roster, the Astros optioned right-hander Paul Clemens to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Clemens has a 4.08 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 17 2/3 innings.

The Astros have the worst bullpen in the major leagues with a 5.56 ERA and 1.59 WHIP.
