The Blues might have seen the last of the “battle” drill for a while. Meanwhile, the club fears that it has lost two of its veteran forwards for an extended period of time after back-to-back injuries Tuesday during the ominous drill. A roster that had remained relatively healthy in the opening weeks of the season got a double dose of potentially bad news when leading scorer Alex Steen and Andy McDonald left the ice just seconds apart late in the team’s practice. The Blues offered no update afterward, and neither player was available to comment. “We won’t know until (Wednesday),” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “Both guys fell in the last drill, so we’ll see in the morning.” About 4½ hours after Hitchcock met with reporters, the club recalled forward Andrew Murray from Peoria under emergency conditions, meaning one or both of the injuries could be serious. The portion of practice that claimed Steen and McDonald is called the “battle” or “small-ice” drill, which the Blues have been conducting for many years, under several coaches. Two nets are separated by approximately 30 feet, and in small groups, the players battle to score. Steen was injured during a puck battle. He fell to the ice and landed on his shoulder. Steen has been hampered recently with a shoulder injury. He went to the bench before heading off to the locker room.
