While the state basketball tournament will begin this weekend, the PIAA will crown its wrestling champions in Hershey over that same span.
Two Berks wrestlers that have a legitimate shot at accomplishing that are Brandywine Heights' standouts Peter Renda and Adam Mackie.
The duo brought home 2A regional titles last weekend. They were the only Berks wrestlers to do so at the tournament.
Renda, a state silver medalist last year, has gone undefeated this season and looks poised for gold.
For Mackie, it's been a near-perfect season. His only loss of the year was avenged over the weekend when he pinned the only wrestler who defeated him this year, Stephen Loiseau from Lancaster Catholic.
The win over Loiseau gave Mackie the regional championship.
Renda and Mackie are a combined 74-1 this year, but the duo shares more than a great record.
In fact, each is responsible for the others' success. Renda and Mackie are training partners on the mats, and best friends off them. This kind of chemistry has helped both wrestlers reach tremendous heights.
