According to the Edmonton Oilers’ official Twitter feed, goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin has been placed on injured reserve, and the team has called up third-string goalie Yann Danis from the Oklahoma City Barons. Khabibulin is no stranger to the injured reserve. He missed five games to start the 2013 season with a hip injury, and thus thus far spent 80 games on the list over a little more than three seasons with the Oilers. Prior to signing with Edmonton, Khabibulin had missed 66 games over four seasons in Chicago, making him the fourth-most injured goalie in the league during that span. His maladies have been varied; while the vague term “lower body injury” has been used most frequently, problems with his back, hip, groin and even eye and finger injuries have been specifically identified as contributing to those lost 146 contests. The timing of the injury is extremely unfortunate for the veteran goaltender, who is in the final season of his contract and has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts with the Oilers this season. Khabibulin has started the Oilers last two games and three of the last four since replacing nominal starter Devan Dubnyk in a victory over the Colorado Avalanche on February 16, and understandably so given his performance. Through five games this season, Khabibulin owns a 2-2-1 record and a brilliant 0.935 save percentage; he’s also been good in every game, with a 3-goals against, 31-save performance against Chicago the closest he’s come to a weak performance. - See more at: http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2013/02/27/edmonton-oilers-place-nikolai-khabibulin-on-injured-reserve-recall-yann-danis/#sthash.U76sGzmo.dpuf
