Tony Romo will sign an extension with the Cowboys. Owner Jerry Jones made that clear Tuesday afternoon while taking a break from the NFL meetings. This is not a question. It’s inevitable. The point Jones wants to emphasize is that the Cowboys must do a better job of utilizing the quarterback’s skills. They must be more creative. This is the charge that faces coach Jason Garrett and his staff. Jones is about to sink too much money into Romo for it to be any other way. “He’s not going to be paid to be a bus driver,” Jones said. “This thing has got to be oriented toward his skills, and we’ve got to be able to take advantage of all the things he does best. I do expect us to be creative.” When will Romo sign? Jones doesn’t have that answer, but he intimated it will be soon. The two sides continue to negotiate, and Jones said, “I’m not concerned that we are looking at a drawn-out thing here.” A bigger concern for Jones is that the club fails to maximize this asset. Garrett has been Romo’s offensive coordinator for the past six seasons. He believes this continuity should be one of the team’s strengths. Yet Jones looks at the Cowboys offense the past two seasons and fears it has grown stale. “I think that is fair,” Jones said.
