Free agent outside linebacker Antwan Barnes announced he was signing with the Jets on his Twitter account Monday. Barnes spent the past three seasons with the Chargers. He has also played for the Ravens and Eagles. A source said the deal had not been finalized yet, but it was close. Terms of the deal were not immediately known. Barnes, 28, had his best season in 2011 when he recorded 11 sacks for San Diego. His production slipped last year as his playing time decreased. He wound up with just three sacks in 11 games. Barnes made five starts in 2011 and none in 2012. Jets coach Rex Ryan knows Barnes from his days as Ravens defensive coordinator. Barnes began his career under Ryan with the Ravens, playing for him in 2007 and ’08. The Jets have not had a strong pass rusher since John Abraham departed in 2006.
