The expected returns of two injured Blues forwards, along with news that another is skating again, led to the club taking on a pass on free agent Jason Arnott on Sunday. Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said the possibility exists that Andy McDonald (knee) and perhaps even Alex Steen (shoulder) could be back in the lineup on the team’s upcoming three-game home stand. Meanwhile, Vladimir Tarasenko (concussion) skated lightly Saturday in St. Louis. With that backdrop, Armstrong notified Arnott, 38, that the Blues would not be signing the veteran forward. He joined the club last week and was auditioning for a chance to add depth to the roster. “When we brought Jason in here, we wanted to see where he was,” Armstrong said. “To his credit, he looks like he’s in great shape. But with the information that we’ve gained, Andy and Alex look like they’re going to return sooner than we maybe first expected. “With that information and the understanding that we’re now carrying three goaltenders and not two, I saw a potential issue with the 23-man roster. And once I added all those things to the equation, I let Jason know.” McDonald and Steen, who were both injured in practice Feb. 26, have missed the team’s last seven games. McDonald was considered “week to week” but made the five-game road trip with the Blues and has been on the ice most days.
