NEW YORK -- Left winger Daniel Carcillo scored early in the third period Wednesday night as the

New York Rangers completed a sweep of the New York portion of the Stadium Series by edging the New

York Islanders, 2-1, at a frigid Yankee Stadium.

Left winger Benoit Pouliot scored in the final minute of the second period for the Rangers (29

-23-3), who are 3-0-0 in outdoor games. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist had 30 saves.

Center Brock Nelson scored late in the second to give the Islanders a short-lived lead. The

Islanders (21-27-8) have held a lead in 17 of their 35 losses, including three times in their

current four-game losing streak.

Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, who was making his first start since suffering a leg injury on Jan.

6, made 32 saves.

Unlike Sunday, when the Rangers and New Jersey Devils scored an outdoor-game record five

first-period goals and combined for a record-tying 10 goals in the Rangers' 7-3 win, neither team

generated much offense in frigid conditions Wednesday. The temperature at faceoff was 22 degrees,

the fourth-coldest faceoff temperature for an outdoor game, but the wind chill was seven degrees.

The Islanders failed to score on a pair of power plays in the first, when they outshot the

Rangers 10-6. Left winger Thomas Vanek had the best chance for the Islanders when his slap shot

bounced off Lundqvist's pads.

Pouliot had a breakaway opportunity earlier in the period but slipped as he wound up to shoot

and crashed into the boards. Later, left winger Rick Nash nearly scored in spectacular fashion

when he turned around to elude Islanders defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky and fired a no-look

backhanded shot at Nabokov, who deflected the shot with his stick.

The Islanders generated plenty of chances in the first 10 minutes of the second period, when

they outshot the Rangers 11-5, but right winger Michael Grabner fired high and left of the net and

center John Tavares was a hair late on a pass to Vanek in front of the net.

The Islanders finally broke through with 1:27 left in the period, when a clearing pass skipped
