Claiming the 10th seed means the Commodores avoided having to play on Wednesday in the four-team opening round of the SEC tourney. Brenton Williams scored 10 points and Bruce Ellington added 10 for the cold-shooting Gamecocks (14-17, 4-14). South Carolina was 23-of-64 from the floors, and made only eight field goals in the first half. The Gamecocks endured a prolonged first-half shooting drought, making one field goal over a span of 9:20 and trailing 36-25 at half. Vanderbilt went cold in the second half, making three field goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half, but South Carolina never tied or regained the lead.Kedren Johnson, Vanderbilt's leading scorer, went 1-for-8 from the field but led the Commodores at the line with 10 made free throws to finish with 12 points. GAME NOTEBOOK: Michael Carrera grabbed 13 rebounds for South Carolina. He missed all nine of his field-goal tries, however. ...
