Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff suffered three broken ribs during Monday's practice.
Ruff was hit by defenseman Jordan Leopold when he was injured. The team did not elaborate on the severity but said Ruff is expected to return to the team for Tuesday's practice.
Leopold went crashing to the ice and ran into the back legs of an unsuspecting Ruff, who tumbled and landed on his right side.
Ruff, 51, is in his 14th season as the club's coach. He is the winningest coach in franchise history.
The Sabres came into Monday tied for 12th place in the Eastern Conference.
