Not much changed, but really everything did for the Lightning on Saturday. Facing a must-win scenario against Southeast Division-leading Carolina, Tampa Bay didn't alter anything in its game plan and didn't put any extra emphasis on the outcome. But the outcome looked much different than in recent games as the Lightning snapped a five-game home losing streak with a 4-1 victory in front of an announced sellout crowd of 19,204 at The Forum. The victory moved Tampa Bay to within seven points of Southeast Division-leading Winnipeg and to within six points of Carolina for the final playoff spot with 20 games remaining. Rookies Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat each recorded their first career goals, Teddy Purcell ended a 13-game goal scoring drought, and Nate Thompson added his sixth of the season. Mathieu Garon stopped 21 shots for his third victory this season against the Hurricanes, while Justin Peters, who made 22 saves, became the third different Carolina goaltender Tampa Bay has beaten this season; Dan Ellis and Cam Ward are the other two. For Bolts coach Guy Boucher, his team's play in Saturday's victory mirrored that of many of Tampa Bay's recent games. The only difference was in what resulted on the scoreboard.
