Appel leaving game of baseball

Former top pick doesn't rule out return

Appel leaves baseball

Mark Appel, who recently was in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, announced on Thursday an "indefinite break" from the game of baseball. The pitcher announced it in an interview with Bleacher Report.

Appel was the top pick in the 2013 MLB draft by the Houston Astros, but failed to succeed in the professional ranks due to several nagging injuries. He was thought to be part of the Astros rebuild, but was deal to the Phillies as part of the Ken Giles trade. Appel pitched 82 innings for the IronPigs this past season.

The Astros won the 2017 World Series.
