The Exeter and Fleetwood football teams are trying to establish themselves as top-tier teams within Berks County. If both teams keep making the playoffs, that goal becomes more and more possible.
Exeter turned in another strong season under Matt Bauer this year. The Eagles went 8-2, earning a 12-seed in the District III-AAAA tournament.
It's the third straight year that Exeter has appeared in the District championships. That's a testament to the job that Bauer has done since taking over at Exeter. He has steadily built the Eagles into a prime contender within Berks Section I.
Friday, the team looks to take another step forward by winning its first-ever District game. The Eagles will play at Central York.
As for Fleetwood, it's new jungle for the Tigers.
In just his second year as head coach, James Martinez has led Fleetwood to a school record 6-win season. In the process, the Tigers have earned their first playoff berth in program history.
Fleetwood will take on Couglin in the Eastern Conference tournament on Friday night.
It's an accomplishment for a program that had struggled for a number of years. But with a strong youth program now in place and Martinez at the helm, this could be the beginning of a very fun time for Fleetwood football.
