The Fightin Phils (36-53) bullpen took the spotlight on a night in which the Trenton Thunder (43-50) took an early lead and held on by a score of 5-1. Nefi Ogando, Mike Nesseth and Seth Rosin each threw two innings a piece against the Thunder.
Trenton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off Chris Bootcheck and the Fightin Phils as Casey Stevenson hit a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Austin in the top of the 2nd inning. In the top of the 3rd inning, Peter O’Brien hit a two-run home run with two outs to extend the Thunder’s lead to 3-0.
Chris Bootcheck was chased out of the game without recording an out in the top of the 4th inning as the Thunder loaded the bases and scored two runs to take a 5-0 lead. Ali Castillo and Mason Williams hit back-to-back RBI singles. Nefi Ogando entered the game and left the runners stranded as he recorded two strikeouts and got Peter O’Brien to ground into a force out.
Reading got on the board in the bottom of the 4th inning off Zach Nuding as KC Serna hit a RBI single to score Kelly Dugan to cut the Thunder lead to 5-1.
The Fightin Phils bullpen retired 18 of the final 20 batters the Trenton Thunder sent up to the plate. Nefi Ogando, Mike Nesseth and Seth Rosin each tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
Chris Bootcheck (0-2) suffered his second loss as he allowed five runs in three innings. Zach Nuding earned the win for Trenton as he pitched 7 2/3 strong innings.
The Fightin Phils head on the road as they’ll be in New Britain to take on the Rock Cats tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
