A six-run bottom of the sixth inning propelled the Reading Fightin Phils to an eventual 8-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Education Day. Hoby Milner earned his first win as he turned in his longest outing of the season by pitching seven innings and allowing two runs off six hits. He walked three batters and struck out three.
Mookie Bets wasted no time in extending his 63-game reaching base safely streak as he hit a leadoff home run off Hoby Milner in the top of the first inning to give Portland a 1-0 lead. The home run was his fifth of the season. The Fightin Phils tied the game at 1-1 off Mike Augliera in the bottom of the fourth inning as Aaron Altherr hit a RBI single to score Carlos Alonso.
The Fightin Phils opened the flood gates in the bottom of the sixth inning off Augliera as they scored six runs to take a 7-1 lead over Portland. Zach Collier hit a RBI single to score Carlos Alonso to bring in the first run of the inning. Cam Perkins plated Collier on a RBI double for the second run of the inning. Brock Stassi and Albert Cartwright hit back-to-back RBI singles to chase Augliera out of the game. Lars Davis hit a two-run home run off reliever Jose Valdez for his first home run as a Reading Fightin Phil.
Portland added another run off Milner in the top of the seventh inning as Henry Ramos hit a solo home run to cut the Fightins lead to 7-2. Reading came back with another run in the bottom of the seventh inning off Valdez with a RBI single from Aaron Altherr to take a 8-2 lead. Henry Ramos hit a solo home run off reliever Kyle Simon in the top of the ninth inning to trim the Fightins lead to 8-3.
Nefi Ogando threw a scoreless eighth inning. The Reading Fightin Phils are now 15-14 on the season and head on the road for the next seven days. They play Thursday evening in Trenton beginning at 7:05 pm.
