Pennridge School Board disappointed by coach's sex crimes

PERKASIE, Pa. - Pennridge School Board President, Dr. Peter Yarnell, expressed deep disappointment in the revelation that one of the district's high school softball coaches was found guilty on Monday of having sex with one of his underage players.

"I'm always disappointed when we have an employee who doesn't live up to the standards of the district," said Yarnell, who was informed of the verdict prior to Pennridge School Board's meeting Monday night.

Eric Romig, 36, pled guilty in Bucks County Court to various felony charges, including possession of child pornography, corruption of minors and sexual contact with a student.

He began working for Pennridge in 2009, following a stint at Faith Christian Academy, during which he was allegedly sexually involved with multiple students.

While serving as a Pennridge High School JV softball coach, Romig had more than a dozen sexual encounters with a 16-year-old student and player.

The Pennridge School Board, however, maintains that they had no prior knowledge of his sexual deviance prior to his arrest last October.

"We go through all the clearances that the state offers and he had a clear record," said Yarnell.

Upon learning of the charges, Eric Romig was placed on an indefinite leave by the district until his trial was resolved.

According to police, since Romig's arrest, four other alleged victims have come forward.

"What the administration did was to act promptly to distance him from any of our students and I think that's the only thing we can do," Yarnell said.

Yarnell also stated that the board will soon move to definitively terminate his contract with the school, likely at their next board meeting on February 24th.

Dr. Yarnell also expressed gratitude that the pattern of sexual misconduct allegedly didn't affect more than one Pennridge student.

"In this case, I'm just glad that it happened seemingly in our situation with just a single student" he said, "which is extremely unfortunate."
