Saucon Valley School Board to vote on security upgrades

SAUCON VALLEY, Pa. - During Tuesday night's meeting, the Saucon Valley School Board discussed various upgrades to the school, including updated security cameras for the district and a security entrance system for the schools.

The board appeared to come to a consensus on the importance of improving the school's security system. Board members plan to vote on these issues at their next meeting on February 11th.

"We agreed that safety was an important item," said board member Sandra Miller.

The security entry doors would cost the district an approximate $170,000, while other improvements, such as seating in the auditorium, may run as high as an estimated $726,000.

According to district Business Manager, David Bonenberger, the money used to pay for the majority of these projects will come not from the budget, but rather from leftover capital funds previously granted to the district through bonds.

These available funds total over $493,000.

"That was the leftover money from the stadium project," said Bonenberger, who argued that the money should be spent sooner rather than later. Other members, however, differed.

Board member Charles Bartolet, a self-proclaimed "stalwart for the tax-payer," questioned the necessity of non-security items, such as a renovation to the high school gymnasium, a renovation of the tennis courts and the repair of a dishwashing unit that has been faulty for the past eight years.

Bonenberger maintained, however, that the bonds were given with the expectation that they'd be spent within the near future. "We have it available and they're expecting us to spend it all."

The board opted to end their discussion without voting on any of the proposed projects, giving themselves more time to flesh out each individual proposal.
