Phanatic pitches in as Phillies gear up for spring training

Pitchers, catchers begin workouts next Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA - It's always a sure sign spring is just around the corner.

A day after their neighbors, the Philadelphia Eagles, celebrated a fine finish to their season, the Philadelphia Phillies are making moves to prepare for the start of theirs.

This is "Truck Day" for the Phillies, the day when they load all their gear into a tractor trailer and head south for spring training in Florida.

It was all hands on deck at Citizens Bank Park early Friday morning. Even the Phillie Phanatic pitched in, making sure nothing was left behind.

The first workout for pitchers and catchers in Clearwater is set for next Wednesday, February 14, with full-squad workouts scheduled to begin the following Monday, February 19. The Phillies will play the Baltimore Orioles in their spring training home opener at Spectrum Field on February 24.

The Phillies will begin their regular season on the road against the Atlanta Braves on March 29. Their home opener against the Miami Marlins is set for April 5 at 3:05 p.m.

The triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs will open their regular season on the road against Pawtucket on April 6; the double-A Reading Fightin Phils will begin their regular season at home versus Erie on April 5.

Both teams will play each other in their annual pre-season 222 Showcase exhibition game at FirstEnergy Stadium on April 3.
