Carlos Ruiz and Jonathan Papelbon were both in the headlines for different reasons on Thursday.
Ruiz is started his rehab Thursday night with the Phillies single-A affiliate in Clearwater.
Ruiz is working his way back from a concussion he suffered when he was hit by a pitch in the ear flap of his helmet on June 26 against Miami.
Papelbon, meanwhile, has been cited as a reported trade target of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
ESPN Los Angeles reported on Twitter on Thursday that the Dodgers are expected to pursue a trade for Papelbon before the July 31st trade deadline.
Papelbon is having a fine season as the Phillies closer, saving 22 of his 24 opportunities and posting a 1.21 ERA.
Elsewhere, the Phillies optioned starting pitcher David Buchanan to the IronPigs to make room for Cliff Lee.
Buchanan filled in admirably for Lee with the Phils, but with Lee set to return to the rotation Monday, Buchanan was out of a spot.
The Phillies also made moves with a couple of infielders on Thursday.
Freddy Galvis was activated from the disabled list and assigned to single-A Clearwater.
Infielder Rusty Ryal, who spent some time with both the IronPigs and Fightin Phils, was released.
