Pivetta shines as IronPigs top Clippers

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (7-7) picked up yet another strong pitching performance from starter Nick Pivetta, and Jesmuel Valentin and Cameron Perkins each blasted home runs in a 4-2 victory over the Columbus Clippers (7-7) Thursday morning at Coca-Cola Park.

The Pigs picked up their second consecutive series win with a two-games-to-one advantage over the Clippers.

Pivetta started right where he left off in his last outing on April 15, as the right-hander pitched 13 scoreless innings from the sixth inning on April 9, through the sixth inning in the 4-2 victory over the Clippers.

Valentin and Perkins paced the offense as both launched home runs to left field, with Valentin starting the scoring with his solo round tripper in the first to give the Pigs a 1-0 lead.

The Pigs added another run in the fourth as Rhys Hoskins, who sent a one-out infield single to third and scored on a fielding error when Perkins reached in the fourth to give the Pigs a 2-0 cushion.

The Clippers got on the board in the top of the sixth, Erik Gonzalez tripled to right and then scored on a Ronny Rodriguez RBI ground out to short to make it a 2-1 Pigs lead.

Perkins then sent a two-run bomb in the bottom half of the sixth to left field with Nick Williams aboard to give the Pigs a 4-1 advantage.

Pivetta left the game after six innings with a 4-1 lead in tact as the right-hander went six innings allowing just one run on four hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters while picking up his third win of the season.

He then turned things over to Cesar Ramos who tossed two scoreless innings and struck out three over two innings for the Pig 'Pen. Pedro Beato then came on to close out the game in the ninth and surrendered a solo home run to Clippers outfielder Bradley Zimmer to trim the Pigs lead to 4-2.

Beato then settled in and struck out two of his last four batters to preserve the Pigs 4-2 win, and Beato picked up his second save of the season.

The Pigs now begin a three-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens Friday night at Coca-Cola Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Pigs will send right-hander Mark Appel (0-1, 8.22) and the Mud Hens had not named a starter at time of print.
